أكد الدكتور حسين رشاد، مدير محمية أشتوم الجميل ببورسعيد، أن بحيرة المنزلة ومحمية أشتوم الجميل مسجلة أكثر من 200 نوع من الطيور المقيمة أو المهاجرة.
وأوضح رشاد أن بحيرات شمال مصر ونهر النيل تعتبر من أكبر وأهم الأراضي الرطبة في شمال أفريقيا، حيث تمثل 25% من الأراضي الرطبة في حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط، لأن الطيور المائية المهاجرة تجد الغذاء اللازم لها. والأمان والراحة في هذه الأراضي.
كما يعتبر البحر الأحمر مكانا ذا أهمية عالمية، لأنه يقع على طريق رئيسي لهجرة الطيور، وتعيش بعض الأنواع المختلفة من الطيور المائية في بعض الجزر في البحر الأحمر.
وأشار إلى أن المناطق المهمة للطيور ببورسعيد هي: الملاحة والتي يبلغ عددها التقريبي 85 ألف طائر، وبحيرة المنزلة والتي يبلغ عددها التقريبي 424 ألف طائر.
