منذ حوالي 25 عاما، وتحديدا في عام 1998، تم إطلاق مياه نهر النيل عبر قناة السلام في إطار مشروع تنمية سيناء. ويساهم المشروع في إضافة نحو 620 ألف فدان إلى المساحة الزراعية المروية بمياه النيل بعد خلطها بمياه الصرف الزراعي بنسبة 1:1. وتمتد قناة السلام وفروعها بطول 262 كيلومتراً.

1- بدأت فكرة إيصال مياه النيل إلى سيناء عام 1979 تحت عنوان “مشروع زمزم الجديد” في عهد الرئيس الراحل محمد أنور السادات.
2- أطلق الرئيس الراحل محمد حسني مبارك مشروع قناة السلام عام 1997.
3- تم إطلاق مياه نهر النيل لأول مرة عبر قناة السلام في 25 أكتوبر 1998.
4- تم إطلاق مياه النيل لأول مرة في أربعة مآخذ بقناة الشيخ جابر الصباح في 8 سبتمبر 2011.
5- افتتح الرئيس عبد الفتاح السيسي محطة المحسمة يوم 22 أبريل 2020.
6- افتتح الرئيس عبد الفتاح السيسي محطة بحر البقر يوم 27 سبتمبر 2021.
7- تم تمويل مشروع قناة الشيخ جابر الصباح من خلال قروض كويتية ميسرة مقدمة من الصندوق الكويتي للتنمية الاقتصادية العربية.
8- تم تمويل مشروع محطة المحسمة من خلال قروض سعودية ميسرة في إطار برنامج الملك سلمان بن عبد العزيز لتنمية شبه جزيرة سيناء.
9- تم تمويل مشروع محطة بحر البقر من خلال قروض كويتية ميسرة مقدمة من الصندوق الكويتي للتنمية الاقتصادية العربية.
