قامت وزارة الإسكان والمرافق والمجتمعات العمرانية بإعداد الخطة الإستراتيجية لتحلية مياه البحر بغرض تغطية احتياجات مياه الشرب حتى 2050 بطاقة إجمالية 8.9 مليون م3/يوم في 11 محافظة، حيث تُغطى الخطة الخمسية الأولى لتحلية المياه تنفيذ 29 محطة تحلية من الطاقة المتجددة بسعة 3.4 مليون م3/يوم قابلة للتوسع إلى5.9 مليون م3/يوم، حيث عرض موقف تنفيذ الخطة والاحتياجات المطلوبة لاستكمال محاورها.
يتم العمل على التوسع في المشروعات المتكاملة للمبادرة الرئاسية “حياة كريمة” في هذا القطاع، وزيادة محطات تحلية مياه البحر، والتوسع في انشاء محطات معالجة مياه الصرف الصحي وتحسين كفاءة محطات المعالجة القائمة، وإعادة استخدام مياه الصرف الصحي والزراعي المعالجة، فضلاً عن بناء قدرات العاملين بقطاع مياه الشرب والصرف الصحي بكافة المستويات الوظيفية، وتفعيل المشاركة مع القطاع الخاص في تنفيذ مشروعات ترتقي بالخدمات المقدمة للمواطن في هذا القطاع.
